My journey to Queen Mary:
My name is Gia, and I am currently a second-year student studying Modern Languages at Queen Mary University of London. I also stood in your shoes as I embarked on my own journey to Queen Mary. The decision to study at QMUL was a pivotal one, and it led me to discover not only an exceptional institution of higher learning but also a city that I couldn’t wait to explore.
As the new academic year approaches, so too does the welcoming preparation for the new diverse cohort of study abroad students. I believe that any semester or year abroad is not just an academic endeavour, it’s a transformational experience that will shape your perspectives whilst creating memories that will last a lifetime. My own journey to Queen Mary has been filled with exploration and learning, and I hope these tips I share with you will make your time with us a little easier.
Top Tips for Embracing Your Study Abroad Experience:
- Get to know the campus. Familiarise yourself with the QMUL campus layout, including the main buildings, libraries and student services. This will make it easier for you to to navigate yourself to your classes without any worry.
- Balance academics and exploration: while academics are important, remember that this is also a chance to explore. Dedicating time to both your studies, and especially for international students, embracing the opportunity for new experiences and challenges whether it’s trying a new cuisine, joining a student society or attending a workshop; these moments will shape your personal growth whilst you’re here.
- Visit your professors during office hours if you have questions or need clarification on course material; the professors are more than happy to help you with any additional help. Many professors will ask after classes if anyone would like to schedule a meeting to go over anything that needs clarification; this will be beneficial to your academic journey at Queen Mary and beyond.
- As an international student it would be highly beneficial if you explore student societies and clubs. QMUL offers a wide range of student societies and clubs catering to various interests. Joining these groups can help you connect and meet other new students and engage in extracurricular activities.
Tips for Living in East London:
- For transportation options I would say familiarise yourself with the public transport system, the London Underground (Tube), buses and the overground trains. I would also recommend that you get a Student Oyster card as it is essential for hassle-free travel. Also check if there are any disruptions or strikes on days you’re going to be using the trains on the TFL website.
- East London offers local parks and green spaces such as, Victoria Park and Mile End Park. These are great places to relax, exercise, or have a picnic.
- Markets and vintage shops -Shoreditch, Brick Lane and Columbia Road flower market where you can find unique items from vintage finds to artisan crafts.
I wish each one of you the best of luck and a transformative journey at Queen Mary University of London. Remember that this experience is not just about academics; it is an opportunity to shape your perspectives, creating lasting memories and foster personal growth. Welcome to this exciting new chapter of your life, and make the most of every opportunity that comes your way!
