Adjusting to life in a different country can be somewhat hard. Just visiting a foreign place sounds like a lot of money, time, and work for many people. Now, just imagine what it is like to study in a foreign country with a different system of education, cultural values, and money system. It has taken a few weeks to adjust to all of these changes, but overall I would not change my experiences for anything. Here are a few reasons why it is completely worth it to study abroad in London.
First, learning about the differences in culture in London has made me expand my view of cultural norms and has made me appreciate my own culture. I am from San Francisco, California, where the people are open and the food is good. Coming to London has shown me a completely different approach to how people address each other on the streets. In London, the apparel is much more formal and people will hold the door for you. I appreciate the formal culture in London much more.
Second, I appreciate the diversity in this country. While the bay area is one of the most culturally diverse areas in the world, the United Kingdom has less of a stigma about mixed ethnicity. The people in this city seem more open to different perspectives and races.
Third, the friends I have made at Queen Mary have made a lifelong impact on my life. The people at this school are some of the nicest and most talented people I have ever met in my life. It is so easy to sit down and have a conversation with the person sitting next to you. I come from a smaller school, which means the people are less engaging because they have preconceived ideas about who you are. Meeting people who do not already know who you are can be nice when you are trying to make a good impression.
Lastly, London is central and it is easy to fly to another country for a quick weekend trip. If you do choose to travel while here, you can spend less than 100 pounds on a weekend to visit places you dream of like Barcelona, Amsterdam, the French Riviera, and more!
Overall, my experience in London has been absolutely fabulous. I appreciate everything that has happened to me. My new life goal is to move here so I can continue to live in London for the rest of my life.
