Barcelona Summer School Experience: Embracing Education & Exploring the Catalonian Gem

Why I choose Barcelona

Hi, I’m Gia! Currently a second-year student studying Modern Languages at Queen Mary University of London, and have had the opportunity to be funded by the GO Summer! programme Bursary to take part in a summer school, and I decided to choose Universitat Pompeu Fabra Barcelona to pursue my academic journey in the heart of Catalonia. I sought for an authentic immersion experience, one where I could step out of my comfort zone and fully embrace a different way of appreciating education in a foreign land. I knew Queen Mary’s GO Summer! programme would promise me the perfect balance between academic pursuit whilst also the leisurely enjoyment of what the city will offer. This GO Summer! experience allowed me an opportunity to travel to a country in which I had never stepped foot, nor imagined pursuing education in.

Arrival and First Impressions

As the plane descended, I caught a glimpse of the city’s coastline whilst the scorching sun above greeted me, a complete dichotomy to the weather in the UK. Navigating my way through the airport, where I would take two buses to my accommodation, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder and adventure. Whilst making my way to the city centre by bus, I will never forget the tumultuous ride just getting there; the ride for me would be very memorable, with a back pack on, suitcase in one hand, and my phone on navigation mode in the other, navigating myself to my accommodation was a struggle to say the least. But, as I settled into my accommodation, the exhaustion soon disappeared.

University Life

July 16th was my first day of class at Universitat Pompeu Fabra Barcelona. Looking back I did not have any idea of what I would be expecting, and instead just let the days take their course. While finding my classroom, I took in the fusion of contemporary architecture and historical charm…as you walk through the campus you immediately feel transported into the future, while still appreciating the city’s architectural heritage that surrounds it. As I strolled through the campus and in my lessons, there was noticeably a diverse crowd of students conversing in multiple languages, which created a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. My classes had a blend of presentations, group discussions and lectures which fostered an engaging learning environment.

Life in Barcelona

There are many to-dos of what you should do in Barcelona, so to make it easier I have condensed the places that I think are undeniably unforgettable. First would be without a doubt La Boqueria, a food hub filled with authentic Spanish dishes and food. If you ever find yourself in Barcelona, I will always recommend this food market, as you could never go wrong with your food choices there. The selection of food offered in La Boqueria will cater to anyone’s food preferences. Whilst I was here, I tried the local delicacies such as the Burritos, paella and empanadas, all of which I would recommend.

There are multiple museums that you can venture to in Barcelona, and the ones I would recommend are Cosmo Caixa and Picasso Museum. Both museums offer a completely different experience from one another. If you would prefer to stroll and admire the art works by Picasso and other renowned artists, then the Picasso Museum would suit you. Or perhaps you are fonder of interactive museums where you can be more hands-on, and learn about history and science in that way, then Cosmo Caixa would tailor to those needs. Or you could be a person like me, curious and try both.

Are you ready to haggle your way through the bustling flea market of Mercat dels Encants de Barcelona? If so, this flea market will not disappoint with its vast number of antiques and second-hand clothing; there is no doubt that you can find the most unique piece to treasure from your stay in Barcelona. Whilst there I found an antique jewellery box that will always remind me of my experiences here.

A social spot known as the Bunkers is where me and my classmates would go together, enjoying the view of Barcelona from above. It offers a different ambiance in exchange from the bustling crowds and loud noises from the city centre, Bunkers allows you to slow down and enjoy your stay in a cosy area of Barcelona.

Lastly, if you want a unique experience in Barcelona then I would recommend attending a Flamenco show in the theatre city hall Barcelona. The enchanting venue sets the stage for an evening with rhythm and authentic Spanish flair. Accompanying the dancers, a live band of musicians filled with soulful singing known as “cante”, added depth and intensity to the performance.

Final Thoughts

Barcelona will always have a special place in my heart. Studying in Barcelona for the summer enhanced my experience here, than if I had just visited as a tourist. Ultimately, my summer school experience allowed me to embrace new challenges with enthusiasm and curiosity.
