Embracing Diversity: My Unforgettable Study Abroad Experience in Santa Barbara

Queen Mary University of London Theoretical Physics student, and Turing Scheme grant recipient, Khadar, shares their experiences of studying abroad at the University of California Santa Barbara, as a person of colour.

Today, I want to take you on a journey through my study abroad experience in the beautiful city of Santa Barbara. As a person of colour (POC) hailing from Barking, East London, I embarked on this adventure under the prestigious Turing Scheme, which not only provided me with an incredible opportunity but also supported me financially through their generous grant.

Before heading off to Santa Barbara, I must admit that I had some preconceived assumptions. Because of media portrayals, I suspected that prejudice and discrimination were hiding around the corner. I was pleasantly delighted, though, to discover a diverse and open workplace where acceptance and warmth were the norm.

Santa Barbara proved to be a haven for diversity. The vibrant population, encompassing people from all walks of life, contributed to a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. From the local communities to student organisations, I was embraced with open arms, leading to beautiful connections and lifelong friendships.

Studying abroad allowed me to embark on a remarkable cultural exchange journey. By immersing myself in the local community, I had the chance to share my own cultural heritage while eagerly absorbing American customs and traditions. This exchange of ideas and experiences fostered personal growth and a deeper understanding of global issues.

Being a POC studying abroad in Santa Barbara sparked a profound exploration of my identity. Engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds encouraged me to reflect on my own cultural roots and the intricacies of my multiple identities. This journey of self-discovery helped me appreciate my heritage while embracing the richness of others’ experiences.

Let’s not forget that studying abroad comes with its fair share of challenges. As an exchange student, I faced occasional bouts of homesickness, and moments of cultural isolation. However, these obstacles transformed into stepping stones for personal growth, cultivating resilience, adaptability, and a broader comfort zone.

In Santa Barbara, I was fortunate to have access to various support systems designed specifically for exchange students like me. Academic advisors, student organisations, and cultural centres played a pivotal role in creating a nurturing environment for our success. These resources were crucial in overcoming challenges and ensuring our overall well-being.

I cannot emphasise enough how the Turing Scheme, through their grant, has played a significant role in making my study abroad experience possible. Their financial support provided me with the freedom to seize incredible opportunities, explore the city, and fully immerse myself in the culture without constantly worrying about finances. The Turing Scheme has truly been a game-changer, revolutionising the study abroad experience for POC students like me.

As I wrap up this blog post, I hope my study abroad experience in Santa Barbara has ignited a sense of wanderlust within you. By embracing diversity, fostering cultural exchange, and overcoming challenges, I have grown personally and professionally. The Turing Scheme has truly empowered me, as a POC, to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create lasting connections across borders. So, take a leap of faith, apply for that grant, and embark on your own unforgettable study abroad adventure. The world is waiting for you!
