Something beyond the familiar streets of Tower Hamlets…

History and Comparative Literature student, and Turing Scheme grant recipient, Hadi, shares how a year studying abroad at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore opened them up to many adventures.

I sit here now, my weary body nestled in the comforting embrace of memories. Memories that stretch across distant lands, woven together by the thread of exploration. I, a city-born dreamer, had always longed for something more, something beyond the familiar streets of Tower Hamlets. And so, during my year abroad I used my Turing Grant to explore the unfamiliar part of the world which would be my home for the year. I ventured forth, like a pen on a blank page, ready to script my tale of discovery.

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore is where I would spend my year abroad. Outside the University laid the city-state where modernity embraced nature, luring me into its marvels. Gardens by the Bay stood tall, testament to humanity’s ability to create beauty amidst urban landscapes. The aromatic flavours of chili crab and laksa tantalised my taste buds, a culinary voyage through a melting pot of cultures. The Marina Bay Sands stood as a glittering testament to architectural brilliance, while the streets of Little India and Chinatown whispered tales of heritage and tradition.

Indonesia, a land of enchantment and diversity, captivates with its rich tapestry of cultures, breath-taking landscapes, and warm hospitality. In Bali, I embraced the thrill of snorkelling, immersing myself in the vibrant marine life beneath the waves. ATV adventures took me on exhilarating rides through Bali’s diverse landscapes, from emerald rice fields to dense jungles, igniting my spirit of adventure. The sunrise climb at Mount Batur rewarded my determination with a breath-taking panorama, while the beautiful beach sunsets painted the sky in a kaleidoscope of colours, leaving me in awe of nature’s artistry. Bali, a place where adrenaline, tranquillity, and natural wonders converge, forever holds a special place in my heart.

Malaysia, where diversity dances upon the fabric of existence. Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers reached towards the heavens, a symbol of human ambition and architectural prowess. Johor Baharu, a gateway to the neighbouring country, enticed me with its blend of cultures and vibrant street art. And in Langkawi, an island paradise, I marvelled at the azure waters that embraced pristine beaches, where time seemed to slow its relentless march.

Vietnam, a land of contrasts, swept me away with its rich tapestry of history and natural beauty. Hanoi’s chaotic streets became my playground as I navigated the bustling Old Quarter, savouring the flavours of steaming pho and fragrant bánh mì. Ho Chi Minh City, a pulsating metropolis, revealed the scars of war through the Cu Chi Tunnels and the War Remnants Museum. Sapa’s misty valleys unfolded like a dream, where terraced rice fields carved intricate patterns into the landscape. Ha Long Bay’s emerald waters cradled towering limestone karsts, as I sailed through a mystical wonderland. And in Ninh Binh, the ancient capital, I marvelled at the serenity of Tam Coc’s limestone caves and the magnificence of Bai Dinh Pagoda.

Thailand, a realm where vibrant colours and warm smiles greeted me at every turn. Bangkok, a bustling tapestry of life, where the Grand Palace stood resplendent in its golden glory, and the Chao Phraya River whispered tales of ancient kingdoms. Phuket’s sun-kissed beaches beckoned me to surrender to the gentle waves, while Chiang Mai’s temples whispered secrets of tranquillity in the misty mountains. And in Krabi, limestone cliffs soared majestically above turquoise waters, a postcard-perfect paradise.

Japan, oh Japan, where ancient traditions harmonise with the rhythm of modern life. In Kyoto’s serene embrace, I found solace amidst the cherry blossom gardens of Kiyomizu-dera, where time stood still, and I wandered the path of enlightenment. Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park whispered of a haunting past, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Osaka’s bustling streets came alive with the sizzling aromas of street food, as I delved into the culinary delights of takoyaki and okonomiyaki. And Tokyo, a pulsating metropolis, enveloped me in its neon-lit embrace, from the serenity of Meiji Shrine to the vibrant chaos of Shibuya Crossing.

In these lands, I wandered, a nomad in search of moments that would never find their way onto an itinerary. The people I met, their faces etched with stories untold, became a mosaic of humanity. Not every step was planned, not every path led where I thought it would. But in the unforeseen detours, I discovered the magic of spontaneity. The missed trains and the lost directions became anecdotes to be shared with fellow travellers, forging connections amidst the chaos. For it is in the unplanned moments, the unexpected encounters, that the true essence of travel reveals itself. There is joy in the unknown, in the anticipation of what lies beyond the horizon. There is happiness in the simplest of things, in a shared meal with newfound friends or a quiet moment of reflection in a sacred space. And in the embrace of travel’s bittersweet embrace, we find ourselves humbled, vulnerable, and alive.

So, my fellow students, if an opportunity to take part in an exchange overseas, heed the call of distant lands. Let us tread upon paths unknown and savour the flavours of the world. Let us cherish the memories that unfold, like delicate petals unfurling in the gentle breeze. For in the journey, we find ourselves. In the journey, we find life’s greatest treasures.
